Poultry/Turkey Breeds
This page is where we showcase the poultry and turkey breeds we currently raise on the farm. The birds are separated into their breeding pens in winter inside a heated barn. In late Spring they are released into a large outdoor pen and allowed to free range in the summertime.
Black/Blue/Splash Ameraucana
The Ameraucana is the original Blue Egg layer. They are not to be confused with Americana or Easter Eggers who lay Green Eggs. We have worked on the BBS Ameraucana for 2 years now, upgraded lines from Westerdale Poultry along with my original lines from 7th Free in Calgary. We are striving to the APA standard eliminating any leakage and poor egg egg color. Currently have 1 Roosters covering 3 hens of all colors. Great layers and very broody in the summer, often the most vocal in the barn.
Wheaten Ameraucana
Wheaten Ameraucana are another variety of the Ameraucana, Blue Egg Layer. The wheaten variety also comes in Black/Blue/Splash. They are sex able at a young age once color appears. They are a calm chatty breed that lay consistant amount of eggs and also go broody in the summer. We have a Blue Wheaten Rooster over Blue & Splash Hens currently.
Black Copper Marans
The Black Copper Marans are the most common Marans variety. Marans are the true dark egg layer laying dark chocolate brown eggs. Variation of color of the egg depends on time of year, age and laying pattern. I find they are more aggressive breeders but good layers.
Standard Barnevelders
Standard Barnevelders are my favorite breed. They have double laced feathering that matures after their first molt. They are extremely docile and usually at the bottom of the pecking order so do best with more mild tempered breeds. Easy to handle, forage very well. They lay medium brown colored eggs. 2021 we have added more APA bloodlines to bring up size and darker egg color and also a splash barnevelder rooster to add some blues.
Silverrudd's Blue (Isbar)
Isbars are a newer breed to North America and the only true Green egg layer. They are created from several breeds including the leghorn and come in Black, Blue and Splash. While there are 2 lines imported into North America they are not a finished breed, some still exhibit light blue colored eggs and fluffy bums. We are working towards keeping to the standard. They lay an impressive 250-300 eggs a year and are amazing foragers. They are flightly which is great when getting away from predators.
Opal Legbar and Cream Crested Legbar Splits
Legbars are another Blue Egg Layer. They are more flighty then the Ameraucana but I find lay more eggs. We have a trio of Crested Cream Legbar currently, the hens lay a big blue egg almost everyday. in 2021 we have added the Opal Legbar, a lavender version of the cream. Currently have pics off Google, new pictures coming soon.
Barred Rock
Barred Rocks are a classic heritage breed producing 300+ eggs a year yet also great for raising for meat. Fast growing birds. My lines are Gilmer and a couple hatchery hens. They are very docile, easy to handle and do great in cold temperatures.
Easter & Olive Egger
Along with our breeding pens, we have thrown certain hens that do not meet their breed standards or cool color crosses to different pens with roosters to create cool colored eggs. Our olive eggers are Black Cooper Marans over Cream Legbar, Easter Eggers (green layers) are Wheaten Ameraucana x Black Copper EE Hens, Ameraucana x EE Hens and Isbar x Ameraucana. Each Cross is unique but all carry some colorful eggs.
Calico Bantam Cochin
We finally have a new bantam breed after a long hard decision! The Calico Bantam Cochin, a beautiful colored well rounded little breed that kids can easily handle. Very broody but good layers. We have a total of 2 pure calico hens, 3 black mottled hens over 3 calico roosters.
